Sanofi appoints new head of R&D

Sanofi SA has recruited a venture capitalist to lead research and development and promoted two other executives in a restructuring of the management team to focus on innovation. Houman Ashrafian is joining the company from SV Health Investors to become executive vice president, head of R&D, while both Madeleine Roach and Emmanuel Frenehard are being promoted, respectively to head business operations and digital strategy at the company.

Dr Ashrafian, who received bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degrees, as well as a DPhil from the University of Oxford, has led clinical science at UCB SA with a focus on precision medicine. More recently, at SV Health, he co-founded and chaired multiple biotech companies including Alchemab Therapeutics, an antibody discovery company.

Ms Roach joined Sanofi in 2022 from AstraZeneca Plc where she was head of global finance services in the Asia Pacific. She has been promoted to a lead a newly created business unit. Mr Frenehard joined Sanofi three years ago as global head of digital and has been named chief digital officer.
