The judges of the General Court of the European Union have elected Maria José Costeira as vice president of the general court until 31 August 2028. The appointment follows the election of Savvas Papasavvas as president of the court. Ms Costeira has been a judge at the EU general court since September 2016 and was president of chamber from September 2019 to August 2025. Appointed as a judge in Portugal in 1995 following her graduation in law in Coimbra and postgraduate studies in intellectual property law in Lisbon, Ms Costeira’s roles included the Commercial Court, Lisbon from 1999 to 2016 and the Court of Appeal, Coimbra before her appointment to the EU court.
The EU General Court announced the appointment on 23 September 2026.
