CEPI (the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) has appointed Ibrahim Abubakar as chief executive officer effective in April 2027. Prof Abubakar, currently Vice-Provost (Health) and Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University College London (UCL), UK, will succeed Richard Hatchett who has led CEPI since its founding in 2017. Dr Hatchett will remain as CEO until the end of his term in April 2027 to ensure a smooth transition.
Prof Abubakar’s experience includes leading the Lancet Nigeria Commission, acting as an advisor to the Nigerian Presidential Taskforce through to UCL where he has overseen the university’s health strategy and a portfolio of research, innovation and clinical partnerships. His appointment comes as CEPI prepares to implement its CEPI 3.0 strategy which aims to transform the way the world confronts epidemic and pandemic threats.
CEPI announced the appointment on 14 August 2026.
