Bruno Sepodes, a Portuguese national and professor of pharmacological sciences at the University of Lisbon, has been elected chair of the Committee for Human Medicinal Products (CHMP), the main scientific committee of the European Medicines Agency. His three-year mandate started on 21 September. Professor Sepodes succeeds Harald Enzmann who held the position for two three-year terms. The CHMP is responsible for reviewing and giving an opinion on applications from industry to market their products on the EU market. The final marketing authorisation is given by the European Commission.
In a statement Prof Sepodes said the agency will be addressing both challenges and opportunities going forward including the review of complex advanced therapies, the integration of digital technologies into decision-making, and the use of artificial intelligence. Prof Sepodes was most recently CHMP vice-chair.
