AstraZeneca hires ex-Pfizer R&D leader

AstraZeneca Plc has appointed Martin Mackay, formerly head of pharma therapeutics research and development at Pfizer Inc, to the newly created post of president of research and development, effective 1 July 2010.

In this position, Dr Mackay will have overall responsibility for the small molecule drugs and biologics that AstraZeneca has under development.

Prior to joining Pfizer in 1995, Dr Mackay was head of molecular and cell biology, central nervous system research at Ciba-Geigy, which is now part of Novartis.

Born in Scotland, Dr Mackay earned his PhD in molecular genetics from the University of Edinburgh.
