Sanofi SA has appointed Gary Nabel, a former director at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), to the position of senior vice president and chief scientific officer. He will report to Elias Zerhouni, president of global research and development. Dr Zerhouni joined Sanofi in 2011 and is himself a former NIH director.
At the NIH, Dr Nabel directed the vaccine research centre, guiding development of novel vaccine strategies against HIV and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. He is a 1975 graduate of Harvard College and earned his PhD and MD from Harvard University in 1980 and 1982 respectively.
Sanofi announced the appointment on 14 November 2012.
