Scientists from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have for the first time located single-letter changes in the DNA code of Streptococcus pneumoniae which enable the bacterium to evade treatment with antibiotics. The discovery was made using a genome-wide association study.

New UK trial paradigm for lung cancer

A new paradigm for testing experimental medicines is being launched in the UK under the leadership of Cancer Research UK and with the participation of AstraZeneca Plc, Pfizer Inc and the National Health Service (NHS). Partners to seek better drug targets

Biomarker identified for depression

A study funded by the Wellcome Trust in the UK has identified a biomarker for depression, the first such biological indicator for the disease. Until now depression has mainly been diagnosed through clinical interviews, a process that can be very subjective.
