Richard Klausner to head new Sanofi-Aventis science council

Richard Klausner, a former executive at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been appointed chair of a new strategic development and scientific advisory council at Sanofi-Aventis SA. He will work directly with Elias Zerhouni, president of global research and development, and also provide strategic advice to the chief executive, Christopher Viehbacher. The council was created in November 2010 to drive forward the company’s collaborative scientific activities. Dr Klausner is currently a partner at the Column Group, a San Francisco-based venture capital company. He was director of the US National Cancer Institute between 1995 and 2001.

Separately, Sanofi announced that it will propose Mrs Suet-Fern Lee, a UK barrister and member of the Singapore bar, to join its board of directors. Shareholders will vote on the proposal on 6 May 2011.
