Sanofi appoints Elias Zerhouni as head of global research

Sanofi-Aventis has appointed Elias Zerhouni as president of global research and development for medicines and vaccines, effective 1 January 2011. He is replacing Marc Cluzel who is resigning as executive vice president of R&D.

Dr Zerhouni, who has been acting as scientific advisor to the Sanofi chief executive, Christopher Viehbacher, since February 2009, is currently professor of radiology and biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital. Among other things, he is a former director of the National Institutes of Health, author of more than 200 publications, holder of eight patents and founder or co-founder of five start-up companies. He is a senior fellow of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a trustee of the Mayo Clinic and the Lasker Foundation. He is also a member of the Légion d'honneur and the Académie Nationale de Médecine.
