Mark Walport to become UK chief scientific adviser

The UK government has appointed Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, as its chief scientific adviser, effective April 2013. He will succeed John Beddington. Mr Walport has been director of the Trust since 2003, a period that has seen a range of important scientific discoveries arising from the sequencing of the human genome. These discoveries have found applications in treatments for diabetes, cancer and rare inherited diseases.

The Wellcome Trust announced the appointment on 28 June 2012.
