Netherlands-based AdJane Holding BV has reported the first clinical data for a new vaccine platform that is being positioned as a technology for use in preparing for future pandemics. The early data showed that outer membrane vesicles, which are vesicles released from the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria, were safe and well-tolerated in 40 healthy adults. The vaccine, based on outer membrane vesicles, was administered intranasally and combined with a SARS-CoV-2 spike protein- the structural component of the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the company, the study showed the ability of its technology to induce both mucosal and systemic immune responses to the virus. Systemic immunity is an antibody response to stop the spread of an infection. By comparison, a mucosal response uses antibodies to neutralise pathogens before they enter tissues. The results of the study were published in the journal Vaccines on 29 June 2026. In a prepared statement, Anita Gashi, the company’s managing director, said that “current injectable vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe disease but have shown limited ability to interrupt infection and transmission at the mucosal level.” The study showed the potential of the technology to be deployed for respiratory infectious disease and pandemic preparedness, she added.
The platform is being tested in partnership with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to develop new vaccines for future health emergencies and with CARB-X, a partnership which is developing new antibiotics.
