Harren Jhoti, co-founder and chief executive of Astex Pharmaceuticals (UK), has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in the UK in recognition of his contribution to drug discovery research and science. At Astex, Dr Jhoti pioneered the development of fragment-based drug discovery, an approach now widely used in pharmaceutical and academic drug discovery.
Before co-founding Astex in 1999, he was head of structural biology and bioinformatics at GlaxoWellcome. Dr Jhoti received a BSc in biochemistry and a PhD in protein crystallography from the University of London.
Astex announced the award on 9 May 2018.
