Benoît Battistelli, chair of the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation, has been named president-elect of the European Patent Office, effective 1 July 2010.

He will succeed Alison Brimelow, who served for three years and decided not to seek another term.

Mr Battistelli is also currently director general of the French National Institute of Industrial Property. The European Patent Organisation is an intergovernmental organisation which was set up in 1977 to grant patents to inventors under the terms of the European Patent Convention. It has 36 members, including the 27 member states of the European Union.
