Benoît Battistelli assumes top job at patent office

Benoît Battistelli became president of the European Patent Office on 1 July 2010, succeeding Alison Brimelow who held the job since July 2007. A lawyer by training, Mr Battistelli joined the French Ministry of Economic and Financial Affairs in 1978 and was instrumental in implementing public policy in a number of ministries and public bodies. He has served as director general of the French National Institute for Industrial Property, and most recently was chairman of the European Patent Office’s Administrative Council. In taking up his new position, Mr Battistelli pledged to help reduce the duplication of work at patent offices around the world and support the European Union patent project.
