Philip Hampton, chairman of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, has been appointed non-executive director of GlaxoSmithKline Plc effective 1 January 2015 and as deputy chairman from 1 April. He will succeed Christopher Gent as non-executive chairman from 1 September.

In addition to leading RBS, Mr Hampton has been chairman of J Sainsbury Plc and group finance director at Lloyds TSB Group, BT Group Plc, BG Group Plc, British Gas and British Steel Plc. He has also been an executive director of Lazards and a non-executive director at RMC Group Plc and Belgacom SA.

GSK announced the appointment on 25 September 2015.
